Vancouver’s Gladstone Secondary is on top of the world again this year after their recent trip to the VEX Robotics World Championship. Collectively the Gladstone “Robosavages” teams returned home with a collective win-loss record of 33-16-1 in qualifying matches and three of their five teams taking part in divisional elimination rounds. Topping it all off, team 2M allied with traditional rivals team WASABI, from Bellvue, Washington, to win the Engineering Division and rank third overall in the tournament. Team 2M, consisting of Howard, Ibrahim, Thomas, Owen, Aman, and Gareth was also recognized by the judges, receiving the “Build” award.
Team 2W, consisting of Kevin, Bryan, Jacob, Justice and Leo finished 8-2, good for 15th place in the 80-team Arts division and a place on the #5 alliance. They won their first playoff series before bowing out in the divisional semi-finals. Team 2K, consisting of Tim, Tony, Nick, Serinda, Jack and Rishaad, finished with a strong 7-3 record, good for 13th in the Technology division. This earned them a spot on the #2 alliance, and the potential to go deep into the playoffs. They were upset in the semi-finals, however, in part due to a “tipping penalty” called against their alliance. Teams 2D and 2Z also posted win-loss records of .500 or above, but did not advance to the playoff rounds of this event, featuring the 400 top VEX robotics competition teams from high schools around the world.
